Genetic disorder likely key to spine surgeon’s legal challenges

marfan syndrome uk logo squareCINCINNATI – It appears that the health fraud case against Dr. Atiq Durrani could ultimately be decided on the basis of expert medical testimony about a rare genetic disorder.

A federal criminal complaint filed with U.S. District Court in Cincinnati accuses the Mason spine surgeon of Medicare fraud and performing unnecessary surgeries.

Dr. Durrani has categorically denied the charges and vows a vigorous defense through his attorneys Michael Lyon and Bruce Whitman.

During an exclusive television interview with 9 On Your Side on Wednesday, Dr. Durrani and his lawyers pointed out that the complaint is based on a medical review of the cases of five patients.

They said they believe all five involve Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), which is a disorder of the body’s connective tissue that can lead to instability at the base of the neck.
